The first round and second round of the derby will have three minutes on the clock. Every competitor will be awarded 30 seconds of bonus time following each round. A hitter can earn an additional 30 seconds of bonus time if they hit a home run that measures at least 475-feet in the regulation period of that round. Participants are seeded based on the number of home runs they've hit this season at the time the bracket was created on Wednesday. Ties are broken by 2020 home run totals, except in the case of Mancini and Alonso. Since Mancini didn't play in 2020, their 2019 totals were used as a tiebreaker.
The man to beat in the competition, Alonso started his quest for a three-peat against an intradivision rival in Acuña, who hit 19 home runs. Alonso was vibing early, bobbing his head to the music that filled Dodger Stadium. He followed that a few swings later with a massive 480-foot homer, earning an extra minute in a span of four homers. Alonso still had some work to do, as he hit only 10 home runs before his break. He came back a little sluggish, hitting three homers before rattling off four straight to bring his total to 17 ahead of bonus time. Alonso needed only 30 seconds before walking it off with his 20th dinger.

The event is taking place at Coors Field on Monday, July 12, with the first batter getting started just after 8 p.m. If a round sees a tie, each player will get 60 additional seconds to hit as many homers as they can. Instead of the tally resetting for each round, it was only reset before the final round. Therefore, the players with the four highest totals after Round 1 advanced to Round 2, and the players with the two highest sum of Round 1 and 2 advanced to the finals. Beginning in 1991, the format changed to a 3-round contest.
